Expectations – Disappointment Under Construction?

When a child is born, we want him/her to be healthy and beautiful and intelligent and what not.. But do we expect them to be all of the above? No. But somewhere along, as the years pass by, this “want” changes to “must” which basically translates to expectations. This change does not happen overnight but gradually. “Expectations” is a very adult thing. And so when we think that our kids have “grown up” (even though they never stop growing, right?), we start “expecting” them to behave in a certain way.

To Whom Ails The Separation Anxiety?

Bit by bit, my notions and my perspective about motherhood and its various phases are changing. Before the little on walked into my life, I had my own theories about everything. All of this accumulated from experience as a maasi to my now 8-year old nephew and all the books and articles I have read over a period of time. But for nothing do they say “Child is the father of man”.

Parenting In A Joint Family

Living in a joint family set up has its ups and downs. Especially after having kids. There are people other than the husband and you to look after the child occasionally. While that may give the new parents, especially the new mother some time to relax and unwind, the repeated differences in the styles of parenting can be a dampener too.

Breaking The Glass Ceiling

The one fallacy that I have woken up to after becoming a mother is how indifferent the corporate culture is towards working mommies. For all the shout outs about women friendly policies, women empowerment, breaking the glass ceiling etc. the truth is far from rosy.

 

The ruthless corporate culture expects a woman to deliver a baby, heal, bond, feed, wean and get back to office in 3 months flat. Yes, that is the maternity leave most of the corporates extend to their female employees. In reality, how many of us can adhere to that deadline is anybody’s guess.
